I dare say that GIS has solutions to the questions yet to be asked in data analytics and probably this convinced the Discipline Head of Information Design at NID, Bangalore, Dr. ![]() Through locational relationships one can analyze the data for specific areas and arrive at better and holistic solutions. But if you look closely, many of these concepts involve data and today location is another defining feature of data. Now these seem to be very niche and specific concepts and not so related to GIS and cartography per se. Yes, this is a relatively newer field than the visual, cinematic, textile or fashion arts but is rapidly being adopted by the Indian industry for User Experience Design, Interaction Design, Strategic Branding and Print & Publication Design. And truly so, when you see the NID Alumni doing so well in almost every art related field be it cinematic arts or visual arts or textile or fashion design and now the field of Information Design. NID is the premier Design Institute in India and can be easily termed as the IIT of Design as they say in the industry, IIT is the pinnacle of learning in Engineering and NID is its counterpart in Design. But before I embark on the details of the cartography capsule, I would pen a few words on National Institute of Design (NID) itself and the need to include GIS and cartography in the curriculum of Information Design. It was for a class of little more than a dozen students of Information Design who are so prodigious with all kinds of data crunching. Last month, Jan 2019, I had a fantastic opportunity to teach Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and thematic cartography at the premier National Institute of Design, Bengaluru.
